As a parent, you will naturally want to give your children the best possible start in life. From their diet to their education, we spend inordinate amounts of time worrying about how we can do the best for our kids, but we often forget to pay attention to one of the most important elements of their development – their eyesight.
Eyesight is crucial to a high quality of life, but it’s also extremely important for a child’s development, with 80% of their learning happening through sight. Luckily however, looking after your children’s eyes effectively can be quite simple, if you follow a few key pieces of advice.
Have regular eye tests
It’s important that children regularly have their eyes tested because these tests will check your child’s visual acuity, the health of their eyes and identify problems early. It’s advisable to have your children’s eyes tested when they are a year old, and then again when they’re three. From there, you should ensure their eyes are tested once per year until they reach 16 years of age.
Protect their eyes from the sun
We all need to ensure our eyes are protected from potentially dangerous UV rays, but this is particularly important for children. Their eyes are more vulnerable to damage from the sun, and an incredible 80% of UV exposure happens before the age of 18. Whenever you’re outside it’s important that you child wears sunglasses, as UV is present on cloudy days as well as when it’s bright and sunny.
You will need to ensure your children are wearing good quality sunglasses that fit them properly, and opt for lenses that offer 100% UV protection. Bear in mind that they will likely outgrow them quite quickly, so while quality is important, you probably don’t want to be forking out for a pair of Chanel sunglasses for your child.
Ensure they’re eating healthily
It’s crucial for their overall health that your child has a balanced diet with a variety of fruits and vegetables, but a healthy diet will also help keep their eyes in good shape.
When you’re buying food for your child, keep foods such as eggs, dairy, nuts and oranges in mind, as the vitamins found in these foods offer the greatest benefits for healthy eyes.
